Mississippian culture
The culture is known mostly by its pottery, because the humid climate in which they lived in destroyed everything except pottery, stone, shell, bone, and charred wood. Their food base was maize, an ancient type of corn. They used flint and bladed hoes in their farming areas. Their major game animal was deer, which provided meat, bone, and hides. Fresh water shellfish and fin fish also appear to have provided a steady source of food. They had carved wooden masks, ornate clay, stone pipes, and pictures of human sacrifice.
